1957-1958 Senior Girls “B” Soccer Team
The following was taken from the 1958 edition of the BRHS yearbook, “The Blue and White,” 68 years ago.
The 1957 soccer season started off with a “bang” almost before we had even settled down to our desks. Nearly 30 ambitious blue-bloomer clad girls from grades 8-12 inclusive arrived for practice the first day and all proved extremely preserving. Soon Mr. Walker, wishing to give everyone a chance to play on the team, divided us up into two teams, “A” and “B”.
We “Bs” were excited when we met our first league opponents from West Kings on our home field. Although Bridgetown finished victoriously with a 7-1 lead, they provided good competition and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
This first victory provided a strong incentive for us as we met Berwick, our second competitors, in a vigorous session ending in a 4-1 win for us. A few days later on the Berwick field, these two teams came into kicking conflict again. I doubt that any of us will ever forget this game amid the mud puddles, one of which was inconveniently situated in front of the Berwick goal. Despite this obstacle and several wet feet, Bridgetown emerged the winners with a 6-1 score, thus gaining for ourselves the Annapolis Valley Championship.
Now we were to meet our strongest competition yet — Lockport, winners of the South Shore title. Caledonia, having the field as nearly mid-way between Bridgetown and Lockeport as possible, became the site of this thrilling “sudden death” duel. Both teams played hard and well all the way, as was evident when it resulted in a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation time, making it necessary to play overtime. I am happy to say that Bridgetown came out on top after a spectacular last minute goal, bringing the final score to 6-4. That night Bridgetown took home the Western Nova Scotia Championship.
River Hebert, winners in Eastern Nova Scotia were to be our contenders for the provincial championship, but due to an unfortunate error resulting in the violation of a provincial rule, they were eliminated. Thus, we the Bridgetown “B” girls automatically and very aesthetically became the Champs.
