1962-1963 – “A” Girls Soccer Champions
The BRHS senior girls’ soccer teams had won provincial Headmasters crowns in 1955, 1957, 1959 and 1960. Having lost at the Regional stage in 1961, the BRHS girls, under coaches Jean Fisher and Sydney Flecknell were keen to try again for the championship in the fall of 1962.
By defeating Digby and Annapolis in the first four games of the season, Bridgetown once again were named Congress Champions and advanced towards Headmasters.
Results of the next four games were as follows:
Bridgetown vs Horton 2 – 0
Bridgetown vs Horton 4 – 1
Bridgetown vs Halifax West 4 – 0
Bridgetown vs Halifax West 6 – 0
Being victorious in these games meant that BRHS advanced to the Headmaster’s Tournament to be held at Pictou. Oxford, New Germany, Pictou and Bridgetown advanced, and the draw determined that Bridgetown would face Pictou with Oxford and New Germany meeting in the other semifinal.
BRHS defeated Pictou by a score of 6-4 and Oxford won out over New Germany.
In the championship game the competition was fierce and the two teams proved to be equal in strength. At the end of regulation time, the score was tied 4-4.
Four overtime periods followed without either team being able to score another goal. Accordingly, it was decided that Bridgetown and Oxford would be declared co-champions.
